Reasons A Dentist May Prescribe A Dental Implant

by Harold Coleman

Dental implants take the place of missing dental roots. The devices are often prescribed for a number of reasons. Here are a few of them.

You Have Lost a Single Tooth

If you have lost a single tooth, your dentist may suggest a dental implant. The device is placed in the jawbone at the site of the lost tooth. There, it integrates with the bone. As a result, the implant is locked firmly in position.

After the wound from the implantation has healed, the dentist contours the gums around the device. Subsequently, a connector is added to the implant before the device is finally topped with a dental crown.

Your Denture Slips

A denture is a customized prosthetic device that is used to replace multiple teeth. The device may be partially held in place by the suction that develops between the denture and the soft tissues of the mouth. However, even with its custom fit, a denture may still move about when exposed to bite pressure as the patient chews. Additionally, bottom dentures typically do not produce enough suction to stabilize firmly, since the floor of the mouth is occupied by the tongue.

To help secure a denture in position, the dentist may prescribe several implants. Unlike a single-tooth restoration, implant-supported dentures do not involve the attachment of a single crown to the abutments. Instead, the multi-teeth device is fitted with a mechanism on its underside to attach to the connectors on the dental implants.

Typically, multiple implants are used to stabilize a denture. Some dentures, such as all-on-four and all-on-six devices, are considered permanent because they cannot be attached or detached by the patient. These permanent devices are connected to implants by screws and can only be removed by a dentist.

You Are Receiving a Dental Bridge But Only Have One Abutment Tooth

A fixed dental bridge is held in place by the device's attachment to the abutment teeth, which border the gap left by the missing tooth or teeth. However, if an abutment tooth does not exist on one side of the gap, a dental implant may be used in its stead to secure the bridge in place. The implant may be installed for the placement of the bridge, or the bridge may be connected to a preexisting implant.

About Me

Dental Veneers Changed My Life

I have never liked my teeth. I had a lot of dental problems, including deep staining and oddly shaped teeth. Every tooth did not have the same shape, and some were rounded while others were more square. Not surprisingly, I never smiled in pictures and not even much in real life. This left people thinking I was mean before they even met me. My dentist told me my best bet to improve the look of my smile was a set of porcelain dental veneers. He said they could make all my teeth white and the same shape. I said I wanted them without any hesitation, and we scheduled my procedures. I love my new teeth, and they really did change my life. I created this blog to help other people living with teeth they don't like realize that they do have options that can improve their smiles and their lives.
