Can You Get A Cavity On A Tooth With A Crown?

by Harold Coleman

A dental crown is an artificial tooth placed over a partial tooth and is added for strength when a tooth is not strong enough on its own. You might need a crown if your tooth has a really large cavity on it, if the tooth needs a root canal, or if the tooth has a major chip in it. When you get a crown, it is important to know that there is still a chance you could get a cavity on this tooth, and here are a few things to understand about this.

The Way It Is Constructed

When you get a crown, you will be able to see that there is a crown on the tooth if you look really closely. When you take a good look, you can typically see the area where the crown fits around the edges of your tooth, and this area is called the margin. A dentist will design the crown to fit completely over the tooth, but there will still always be a small area that is not completely covered. The crown is often made of porcelain or a similar material and is cemented over the tooth. There is a very small chance that the crown will ever come loose and fall off.

You Must Clean It Thoroughly

With a crown, good oral hygiene is vital, especially around the margin area. This area is near the gum lines and can be a good area for plaque to stick to. If you do not clean it well and plaque begins building up on this area, it can lead to a cavity forming on the margin area. If this happens, the cavity could actually spread onto more of the tooth structure, and this means it could even affect the part of your tooth that is covered by the crown.

How a Dentist Treats this Type of Problem

If you end up with a cavity on a tooth with a crown, your dentist will either spot it by looking inside your mouth or on the x-rays. To fix the problem, your dentist would need to remove the crown from the tooth before going any further. Next, the dentist would need to remove all the decay and probably fill the whole where the decay was. Finally, you would need to get a new crown to fit over this tooth.

About Me

Dental Veneers Changed My Life

I have never liked my teeth. I had a lot of dental problems, including deep staining and oddly shaped teeth. Every tooth did not have the same shape, and some were rounded while others were more square. Not surprisingly, I never smiled in pictures and not even much in real life. This left people thinking I was mean before they even met me. My dentist told me my best bet to improve the look of my smile was a set of porcelain dental veneers. He said they could make all my teeth white and the same shape. I said I wanted them without any hesitation, and we scheduled my procedures. I love my new teeth, and they really did change my life. I created this blog to help other people living with teeth they don't like realize that they do have options that can improve their smiles and their lives.
