2 Home Remedies for Treating Your Symptoms Caused by Severe Cavities

by Harold Coleman

If you have severe cavities, you may experience some pain and sensitivity to hot or cold foods, leading you to wonder if there is anything you can at home to relieve your discomfort. If so, use one or both of the following natural home remedies.

Peppermint Oil and Salt Water Gauze

This remedy uses the application of gauze soaked in salt water and peppermint oil. The salt helps clean your teeth and kill any germs that could lead to infection. The peppermint oil serves as an antiseptic, as well as helps relieve any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing.

To make the gauze, combine a teaspoon of salt with a quarter cup of warm water, allowing the salt to dissolve for about 15 minutes. Then, stir in four drops of peppermint essential oil. Place a two-by-two piece of gauze in the solution for every tooth you wish to treat, and let the fibers soak up the solution.

Once the gauze pieces are saturated, fold each one in half, and place them on a bad tooth. Gently bite down on the gauze, and leave it in for about 5 to 10 minutes. Then, remove and throw the gauze away. You can repeat this two or three times a day.

Baking Soda and Peroxide Mouthwash

This next remedy involves rinsing your mouth with a mouthwash made from baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide kill bacteria around the tooth, while the calcium in the baking soda coats and temporarily fills the cavities to decrease their exposure to air and food particles.

To make the mouthwash, mix together two tablespoons of peroxide with one tablespoon of baking soda. Once the baking soda has dissolved for about 5 minutes, add three to four tablespoons of warm water. Do not use cold water, as this could irritate your already sensitive teeth.

Swish the mouthwash for about a minute, then spit it out without rinsing afterward. Do this after brushing your teeth first thing in the morning and before going to bed. You can also use the mouthwash to rinse your mouth after eating or drinking to thoroughly clean your teeth and desensitize them.

Using one or both of the above remedies should give you some relief from your cavities. However, you may want to make an appointment with a dentist like those at Persona  Dental so they can examine your teeth and discuss any treatment options available to you.

About Me

Dental Veneers Changed My Life

I have never liked my teeth. I had a lot of dental problems, including deep staining and oddly shaped teeth. Every tooth did not have the same shape, and some were rounded while others were more square. Not surprisingly, I never smiled in pictures and not even much in real life. This left people thinking I was mean before they even met me. My dentist told me my best bet to improve the look of my smile was a set of porcelain dental veneers. He said they could make all my teeth white and the same shape. I said I wanted them without any hesitation, and we scheduled my procedures. I love my new teeth, and they really did change my life. I created this blog to help other people living with teeth they don't like realize that they do have options that can improve their smiles and their lives.
