What To Expect From Your Dental Implant Process

by Harold Coleman

If you are missing one or more teeth, chances are good that you are considering a dental implant. Dental implants are made from titanium and are attached to your jawbone. A titanium implant has a cap on it, giving the impression that you are not missing any teeth. You need to get dental implants if you are worried about maintaining a healthy-looking smile because, if there is a gap between any of your teeth, your other teeth will start to collapse inwards towards that gap. Here's what you can expect from the process.

1. Schedule Your Appointment With the Prosthodontist

A prosthodontist specializes in restoring people's smiles by adding implants and bridges to their mouths. You are going to need to get a referral to this type of dentist in order to be sure that the surgical procedure can happen as quickly as possible. There are not as many prosthodontists as there are regular dentists, so it might take awhile for you to get an appointment. If you are especially bothered by the gap between your teeth or have some other reason why you would want the implantation to happen earlier, try calling each day to see if anyone has cancelled and they can get you in.

2. Get an X-ray

Next, you will need an x-ray. The x-ray is going to show the prosthodontist whether or not you have the amount of jawbone necessary to support an implant. If you do, a surgical appointment will be scheduled and molds of your face and teeth will be made. This will ensure that correct-sized implants are created and make it easier for the surgeon to avoid your sinuses during the procedure.

If your jawbone currently isn't strong enough to maintain the implant, your prosthodontist will start talking to you about the possibilities of bone grafting, which is a process that is designed to build up your jawbone.

3. Be Patient

You are going to need to do your surgery in two steps, once your jawbone is strong enough to sustain the implant. First, you will have to undergo surgery and have the titanium implant put into your jawbone. You will then need to allow the implant and the jawbone to gradually fuse together so that the implant is strong enough and well-supported enough to hold a crown. This can take a few months. The second step of the process is to have the crown itself, or the piece of the implant that actually looks like a tooth, put on.

About Me

Dental Veneers Changed My Life

I have never liked my teeth. I had a lot of dental problems, including deep staining and oddly shaped teeth. Every tooth did not have the same shape, and some were rounded while others were more square. Not surprisingly, I never smiled in pictures and not even much in real life. This left people thinking I was mean before they even met me. My dentist told me my best bet to improve the look of my smile was a set of porcelain dental veneers. He said they could make all my teeth white and the same shape. I said I wanted them without any hesitation, and we scheduled my procedures. I love my new teeth, and they really did change my life. I created this blog to help other people living with teeth they don't like realize that they do have options that can improve their smiles and their lives.
